This particular theme covers many aspects of the novel, it covers relationships, friendships, self-esteem and having confidence. The reason I think that bullying was a main theme in this novel was because the book is targeted at teenagers and it means that they can learn more about bullying and standing up for themselves and understanding that it is a normal thing and you're not the only one going through it if it is happening to you. Some clear parts of the novel where bullying is a massive issue are the parts where Barry is purposely making other people's lives horrible, like when he hides spiders and other bugs in James Scobie's desk to try and prove to others that he is scared of at least something, when he ruins the certificate that Bill Kingsley received for debating and was very proud of, calling Ishmael names all throughout the book and even humiliating others. It is an obvious theme throughout the entire book, and is incredibly hard to miss. James Scobie is the trigger for fighting back to Barry Bagsley, as the new and nerdy kid at school he is the perfect target but isn’t what Barry thought he would be. The main part of the theme bullying is the standing up for yourself and not completely but almost fighting back and putting the bully back in the right place. Throughout the novel he is mean to many kids and does numerous things to make them feel bad, he calls them names, ruins their things, hides bugs in their desk and anything he can to make their lives a living hell. There is a bully named Barry Bagsley who is mean to anyone standing in his way. Bullying is a big problem these days and it shines through completely within this book.
